Phu Tok, Bueng Kan: A Spiritual Ascent in Isan

Magnificent views from Wat Phu Tok

Wat Phu Tok should be on the top of your ‘must-see’ list when visiting Thailand’s Isan region.

Located in Si Wilai, Bueng Kan in the northeast, Wat Phu Tok is a majestic sandstone mountain that rises unexpectedly from the surrounding plains. Its name translates to "lonely mountain" in the local dialect.

A place for reflection. There are multiple temples within the complex

The main attraction here is Wat Jetiyakhiri (Wat Phu Tok วัดภูทอก), a unique, somewhat rickety wooden stairway-temple complex built into the cliffs of the smaller peak, Phu Tok Noi. Founded by Monk Luang Pu Juan, the wooden walkways spiral around the mountain’s seven levels, symbolising the seven stages of Buddhist spiritual development.

The winding wooden walkways require absolute mindfulness

That said, the star of the show is the journey to the top itself.

The incredible site of Wat Phu Tok

Each level offers different perspectives and challenges — from gentle forest paths to narrow, cliff-hugging wooden bridges with sweeping views over the plains. The upper levels are not for the faint-hearted, but you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful, meditative atmosphere and breathtaking scenery.

A breathtaking experience

Phu Tok is one of the most striking and lesser-known spiritual destinations in Thailand, attracting pilgrims, adventurous travelers, and photographers.

Top three tips:

💡 Take plenty of water with you
💡 Wear a hat and comfy shoes
💡 Be mindful and take care
